Inspired by traditional Chinese scholar chairs, this contemporary version by SCENE SHANG changes the traditional sitting posture, from a stiff, if not serious one, to one with a relaxing lean-back, while still appearing refined.
Handmade by artisans from sustainable rattan, this piece marries the art of tradition with contemporary and improved methods. Each arm rest is made by skillfully joining selected rattan core and then moulded to form a flat smooth surface on one side. The same method of joining and moulding is also applied to the back rest and yoke, lending a contemporary take to a traditional aesthetic. Tapered legs are capped with specially shaped brass feet for a touch of luxe.
Finished in a natural, rustic clear coat on the rattan.
A classic chair for any space.
“Chinatown is the heart of personal history for many Singaporeans, including myself who grew up here with the fondest memories of the Majestic Theatre (大华剧场) and Kreta Ayer People’s Theatre (牛车水人民剧场). In the 70s and 80s, watching movies and opera performances were favourite family pastimes. Big festivals like Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn, shopping at People’s Park Complex (珍珠坊) was always a highly anticipated affair. This design is a celebration of all these memories, which are akin to movie scenes that never fade away.”
- Mike, Onlewo
