饮水思情 - Love is a Warm Brew - The Making of an Award-Winning Design Inspired by the Warmth of Home

Here at SCENE SHANG, we draw inspiration from real life stories around us. Come take a peek into the design process behind our award-winning designs.

 In Love is a Warm Brew, we were inspired to create a graphic pattern that is rooted in Singaporean history and culture, and that expresses Singapore’s unique cultural mix and calls to mind the warmth of home.

We asked ourselves what made us feel the warmth of home, of living in Singapore. There were a few ideas, but the one that spoke out to us was the myriad of warm brews. Some brewed for us by our family and loved ones, some brewed outside in the kopitiams, the sarabat stalls etc, that are such a large part of our Singaporean culture. These memories definitely bring a warm glow to our hearts.
 
Memories of Mom brewing that ginseng drink to keep us energized during stressful work periods, Grandma making that chrysanthemum drink when she felt we were too heaty, chugging down mugs of teh halia or kopi from the sarabat stall after intense meetings or just to hang out with friends.

We brainstormed a list of these drinks that are also rooted in cultural history from different cultures in Singapore. The wide array of these drinks certainly makes for a very interesting and uniquely Singaporean landscape.


We then took the ingredients from these drinks and illustrated them in a batik style.

In collaboration with Weavve Home, Love Is A Warm Brew print is available on Lyocell Pillow Cases in pairs of Pink and Blue! Pamper yourself and your loved ones with the most luxurious sleep and the sweetest of dreams.

Studying how traditional batik is drawn with wax, we referenced the method and drew out the ingredients and created a pattern that was weaved out of meaningful natural ingredients that are used to make warm, nourishing brews that make all of us feel at home in Singapore.


The Design

The Greatest Christmas Tales

The pattern that we created symbolises the love, care and kinship found through making, giving or sharing these warm brews. Available in various forms such as drinking mugs, cushions, greeting cards and tea towels, the pattern makes these objects meaningful, recalling the moments of love, care and kinship found and enjoyed.

In 2019, Love is a Warm Brew was awarded the Most Popular design in the Singapore Creator Awards Graphic Design Category.

The Love is a Warm Brew design has also inspired renown master tea blender and tea judge, Bernadine Tay, to design two special tea blends - Love is a Warm Brew - Pink Blossom and Love is a Warm Brew - Blue Cornflower.
